29 May 2015- A new beginning with sadness and joy

3 Comments General   (on 29th May, 2015 11:28 AM)

Dear friends,

I hope this message finds you in good health.

As I sit down to share my thoughts with you, I feel an incredible sense of both sadness and joy.

My sadness is due to my decision to depart from Islamic Relief, the organisation to whom I have dedicated my heart and soul for the past 12 years.

I do, however, find great joy in knowing that Islamic Relief will continue to provide essential services to those who are most needy, and that the work will be carried out by truly incredible people.

Since my first visit to Sudan in 2004 with Dr Hany Al Banna, which laid foundation to not only the importance of the work carried out by Islamic Relief, but the greater importance of those who have benefitted as a result, I have always heard Dr Al Banna’s words echo in my ears:

“The poor people are your employers”.

I feel I have learned the true meaning of these words as I visited the many countries that have required the assistance of Islamic Relief, from the flood ravaged countryside of Pakistan, to the devastated landscape of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, and the starving refugees in Lebanon, Afghanistan, Somalia, Kenya and most recently Syria.

I have learned over the years that I cannot change the world, but I can change someone’s world.

I am both humbled and grateful for the experience – Alhamdulillah.

I am also grateful to have had the opportunity to meet the amazing staff and volunteers of Islamic Relief Fundraising offices around the world, who work tirelessly and passionately, in connecting with the many communities in their regions – I would need to write a book to be able to list all of your names!

Each one of you, however, will always carry a spot in my heart. You are very special, incredibly talented people!

As for the next chapter in my life, I have accepted a position in the Community Interests department at Napiershall Formula, a Scottish based consulting firm which works on national and international projects for governments, corporations and third sector organisations.

I would like to thank you for all your support and guidance from the bottom of my heart.

My very best wishes,

Habib Malik
